Disney has released a trailer for Cruella, a film about Cruella de Ville, the elegant malevolence and fur lover of 101 Dalmatians. The film will reveal the heroine’s backstory and what she did before deciding to make a fur coat out of puppies. The main role in the film was played by Emma Stone. Craig Gillespie (“Tonya Vs All”) was responsible for the direction.

The action takes place in the 1970s when Cruella was Estella and dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. At the age of 12 she lost her parents and ended up penniless in London. To survive, she teamed up with two local criminals, petty thieves Horace and Jasper. Once, a chance meeting brought Estella into the world of the young, rich and famous, and a promising rock musician hired her to create an author’s jewelry for him. It turned out that Estella is ready to do anything to fulfill her old dream and make her way up.

Two weeks before the launch of Cruella both in theaters and on Disney + with Premier Access, critical responses to the villains’ upcoming genesis story have waned. The film is the third live-action episode in the 101 Dalmatians series in which Emma Stone wears black and white hair to play the legendary fur-bearer Cruella De Vil.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara with a story by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel and Steve Zissis star Cruella Stone and Emma Thompson as Baroness von Hellman, Joel Fry as Jasper, Paul Walter Hauser as Horace, Emily Beecham as Catherine de Vil, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Anita Darling and Mark Strong as John, the baroness’s valet. The film is produced by Andrew Gunn, Marc Platt and Kristin Burr, with costumes by Jenny Beavan from Mad Max Fury Road.
Now that the film is set to be released in a few days, it’s time to find out what the critics thought. Is Cruella making a name for herself among the other original films that add a little more backstory to our favorite Disney villains, or would it have been better left in the vault? Check out some of the early critical responses below — we’ll keep updating them as more are added:

Cruella de Vil returns to our screens, but we’ve never seen the iconic Disney villain look like we did in Cruella.

Disney has given many of its classic animation live action remakes over the past few years, but these aren’t just another 101 Dalmatian makeovers (how can you beat Glenn Close?).

Instead, Emma Stone takes on the famous role as we explore the villain’s backstory.
It’s a similar approach Disney took with Maleficent, but where this Sleeping Beauty prequel reinterpreted the villain as not quite as vicious, it looks like Cruella will stay bad to the bone in the new movie.

Everything you need to know about Cruella is here.
In addition to Emma Stone as Cruella, the prequel film will also bring her criminal collaborators Horace and Jasper to life. The sibling duo is played by Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry.
That’s all characters from the original animation have to offer, but the other key role in the film goes to Emma Thompson as Baroness von Hellman, who is believed to be instrumental in making Cruella the villain we know and hate.

The cast also includes Mark Strong, Emily Beecham, Jamie Demetriou, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. Her roles are being kept under wraps for the time being, but Strong has been annoyed as to what to expect from the film.

“What the film does, which is brilliant, is to try to shed some light on where the Cruella came from, which we think we know. It’s a story of evolution, as you see how Cruella became Cruella de Vil growing up who we know and love hate, “he told Collider.
Disney released the first trailer for the prequel movie on February 17th, showing Stone’s transformation into the classic villain.

If you haven’t seen it above, it’s back:
Cruella will be released in theaters in the UK and US on May 28th. So it doesn’t take long for everything to run smoothly.

However, as we now know, due to the ongoing global situation, all release dates are currently up in the air. If it’s a theatrical release chances are the UK or US (or both) date may need to be postponed.

The alternative is that Disney could take a similar approach to Mulan and Raya and the Last Dragon by putting Cruella on Disney + with Premier Access and having a theatrical release in countries where cinemas are open.
The prequel film has been rumored to be moving to Disney +, but it was confirmed at Disney Investor Day in December 2020 that it would still be a theatrical release rather than being moved to the streaming service.
With the first trailer, Disney also released the official synopsis for the prequel film.

“Cruella is set in London in the 1970s in the midst of the punk rock revolution and follows a young Grifterin named Estella, a smart and creative girl who is determined to make a name for herself with her designs,” it says.

“She befriends two young thieves who appreciate their appetite for mischief, and they can build a life for themselves on the streets of London. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion is struck by the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend Who Is Devastating chic and terrible skin.
But their relationship sets off a series of events and revelations that will result in Estella embracing her evil side and becoming the rough, fashionable, and vengeful Cruella. “

The film is set in the 1970s, but there is no confirmation of how many years before 101 Dalmatians this was expected. After all, the animation came out in 1961, but perhaps the release of the 1996 live-action remake is a better clue.

If it’s supposed to be at least 20 years before 101 Dalmatians, it means we can’t expect to see cameos from other characters or nod at the events of the original film, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
